Colheita 1963 - producers?

Post by Henrik Lilja »

I'm trying to gather some kind of overview in regard to colheita from the year 1963.
I do know: Burmester, Krohn, Kopke, Dalva (white), Messias, Feuerheerd, Barros, Romariz, Maynard, Niepoort, J W Hart, ...?

Bring it on - maybe with some links - where you can still buy ;-)
Best regards

Didn't Dalva have both a regular (red) and a golden white Colheita?

Nope - Dalva only made the white.
Yes - Feist made a colheita 1963 - so did: Calem, Van Zeller, Royal Oporto and Andresen.

Could've sworn it was a red one, too expensive over here so did not pay it much attention. I think it was about $275 converted.

Good memory Moses. Here it is.
Sorry to say, I had a hole Line up of Port from 1963 (my girlfriends birthday), including a Burmester colheita. But this little red monster was fantastic.

The 1963 Dalva White Port is what Dalva came up with to replace the depleting 1963 before it was all gone. There is a very significant qualitative difference between the two. They also came out with the 1971 White at the same time. While I enjoy the 1963, especially after some VA blows off by day 3, one should not have to wait. The 1971 to me is volatile and unbalanced and MUST have a few days or a week to really be enjoyed. Not a fan of the latter. That being said, there are many other excellent Colheitas in their lineup. Even though a tad young the 1985 (red) Colheita is superb ... as just one fine example.

Roy,
You been sampling the Thanksgiving wines and Ports early?

Assume you mean to replace the depleting 1952

Rounding up - if you should have misunderstood Roy - there has never been a RED COLHEITA 1963 from Dalva - the depleting 1963 from Dalva was a "vintage port". Nice pic of the 1963 colheita from Feist.

The 1963 colheita list is as follows:
Dalva ("golden" white)
Burmester
Krohn
Kopke
Messias
Feuerheerd
Barros
Romariz
Maynard (also bottled under the alias VZ (Van Zeller))
Niepoort
J. W. Hart
Feist
Andresen
Royal Oporto
Calem
William & Sons

Not on your list, there is a Casa do Douro 1963 colheita. I don't know whether there are two Calem colheitas from 1963, but I have had a Calem Foz 1963 colheita.

It's always possible that my notes are wrong, but I have separate tastings notes of colheita and of white colheita from the Casa do Douro from the 1963 vintage.

Good to know. I had only ever heard of the white version.
