Interesting aquisition

I have just secured a rare and interesting old bottle - Sandeman 1947

The bottle is excellent condition, aside from a heavy coating of cellar dust.

Bottled in post-war brown glass with an intact and neatly embossed capsule, the label is fully intact and the level is just into the neck. I am pretty certain this an Oporto bottling.

The label makes reference to "The late King George VI" which suggests that it was either bottled or labelled in 1952 or later.

Was it common practice for Sandeman to bottle first and label later at that time?

(Don't ask me what it tastes like - I have no immediate plans to drink this one!)

I cannot speak specifically to Sandeman, but -- yes -- several different shippers would commonly "bottle now, label later."
