Yes, just the metalcap kept the Port inside. I have tried it once before with a Niepoort Colheita 1937, and that bottle was just marvelous to. But it had the waxing intact.Andy Velebil wrote:Was the capsule the only thing sealing it? If so I've only seen that happen once with an old bottle of Bordeaux I was given.Allan Engelsted Laurents wrote:Opend an old Taylor Tawny last night. Nothing to talk about. But I just decanted this old Tawny from Real Vinicola.
Whao....although the cork was floating in the bottle, the Port is really great....Dark Brown and the taste is just both round and deep.
Amazing, that the Portwine is so powerfull, that it Can cope with the incoming air.
Andy, what makes the cork get sucked in? Pressure?
The old cork was compleately conical. Allmost pointy.

Usually the cork just dries out and shrivels up, then falls into the bottle.Allan Engelsted Laurents wrote:Yes, just the metalcap kept the Port inside. Re: What have you opened this week?
Not my bottles but a heck of a great weekend just passed:
12 bottles of 1963, five of which were magnums. The 1963 Nacional was in pristine condition.
Then came more Nacionals, including 1958, 1960 and 1962. Loads of fun.
Just when I thought the party was about to end, there were two more fine bottlings: 1927 Dow and 1931 Noval (regular).
Not a single corked bottle. These were from the importers private cellar and all were purchased at least 3 decades ago. Port tongs were used to open each and every single bottle.

Going to Schweden for a few days with the love of my live. Bringing two bottles of Port.
The Offley is bottled in 1984. But my guess is, that the Presidente is at least one decade older.
Looking forward to the Niepoort.... See You in a few days.

I opened a bottle of Krohn 2005 LBV earlier this week. Very pleasant drinking.
