Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?
I've been happy to buy a bunch of stuff at auction from K&L at reasonable prices, but there are plenty of buyers at that market. I haven't gotten any steals, and I'm outbid more there than at many of the other auction sites.

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?
'won' at Acker yesterday - I underbid the low estimate on 2 lots a weeks ago and was somewhat surprised to actually win one of them.
1 bottle 1863 Madeira Boal, Abudarham <--anyone know anything about this? I couldn't find a bit of info.
1 bottle 1914 Madeira Boal, Abudarham
1 bottle 1926 Madeira Boal, Cossart Gordon
1 bottle 1944 Madeira Sercial, V. J. H
Not much info out there on any of these bottles so perhaps a small gable...do questions remain re:Acker?

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?
What a score! These bottles should be terrific!
The only problem I've had with Acker Madeira is some discrepancy between wine named in the lot and the wine that gets delivered.
I recently got an Acker lot described as 2 bottles of 1957 D'Oliveiras Terrantez. It was, as I had feared, 2 bottles of 1957 D'Oli Old Wine Madeira-- certainly a good Madeira, but not the magic of an unknown Terrantez vintage. Once I notified them of the problem, they immediately offered to drop the price and give me an auction credit, or take back the bottles and refund my money for the lot. Of course, I kept the 2 bottles and accepted the auction credit.
What I am saying is this-- as soon as you get the Acker shipment, open the box, and make sure you're happy with whatever bottles you actually receive.
My guess is that you are not getting a bottle of 1863 Abudarham Bual-- probably a different producer.

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?
Thanks Jim - I'll definitely open them when they arrive - I should get what they advertised. If they make a similar offer I would probably take it. :)
CT comes up with the following for 1863: Cossart/Miles/Leacock/Welsh (solera) suggests that MWC had some 1863's but not under Abudarham.
1863 Barbeito Madeira Boal
1863 Barbeito Madeira Boal Frasqueira Reserve
1863 Barbeito Madeira Boal MBV
1863 Cossart Gordon & Co. Madeira Boal Very Old E.B.H.
1863 Henriques & Henriques Madeira Boal Special Reserve Grand Old Vintage
1863 Leacock Madeira Boal
1863 Lomelino Madeira Boal
1863 Madeira Wine Association Ltd. Madeira Boal
1863 Miles Madeira Boal Solera
1863 Joao Romao Teixeira Madeira Boal, Malvasia Fina
1863 Joao Romao Teixeira Madeira BOAL JRT Boal, Malvasia Fina
1863 Welsh Brothers Madeira Boal

This is not a primary source, but the list of madeira vintages on Peter Reutter's site "Madeira Wine Guide" includes 1863 Abudharam boal.

Looks legit.
Mediocre fills on the 1914 and 1926 which were also both show signs of horizontal storage.

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?
Certainly does look legit. Conti Brothers was the importer for Abudarham. I have a few Abudarham Madeiras, but none from the 1800's. Quite exciting!
The fill level shouldn't be an issue. I've had many great Madeiras from low fill bottles. On May 1, I opened a bottle of 1907 Blandy's Bual that had a mid-shoulder fill; it is absolutely gorgeous. It's a good thing that I found a replacement-- the 2 last bottles of the 1907 at Zachy's last night, and bought them for $750 a piece. I also managed to order a bottle of 1863 Barbeito Boal for $470 from some outfit in Texas, while I was web-surfing last night.

Just an update on my 1863 Barbeito Boal purchase-- I was notified that someone else bought that bottle on Monday.
None left for me...

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?
The terrifying thing is that in the current market $750 for the 1907 is a decent deal. I've got a few of them but haven't opened any yet, glad to hear they should be great.

1880 Blandys Verdelho
It's been calling to me for a while; I had to have it.
Not the highest rated bottle with mixed reviews but it was reasonably priced, relatively, and the only 19th c. bottle of Blandy's Verdelho available in the USA outside of potential future auctions.

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?
The Christies June online just closed. It was very quiet, I'm happy to report that there was not much competition on most lots...or at least the ones I was watching.
Won:
350 - d'Oliveiras, Verdelho 1912 (1)
405 - Mixed Madeira(10) (Broadbent, Verdelho 1954(1)Broadbent, Bual 1964 (8) Broadbent, Terrantez 1978 (1))
407 - Blandy's, Bual 1958 Madeira 12 bottles per lot
Lost:
351 - Leacock, Bual 1966 11 bottles per lot
I also 'won' 2 very cool Huet lots at ~60% less than retail value.

Was it a Solera? If so, I tried two bottles of it and it didn't show well both times.Matt K wrote:1880 Blandys Verdelho

Re: What Madeira(s) Have You Purchased Recently?
It wasn't advertised as such but solera is all I see in TN's for Blandy''s 1880V....hmmm, I know some of the notes weren't exactly stellar. I don't think it has shipped yet and now I'm wondering if I cancel it.
