Yes, Richard Mayson did a great service to the Port trade and collectors alike. It had been since Suckling's "Ultimate Guide to Vintage Port" which is now an antique in terms of the information and TNs/scores.

Richard is a really remarkably likeable guy too ... which makes reading his books even better.

I remember the "non-answer" I got when asking James if he ever planned to write an updated version.

It amazes me that people still use the ancient scores that Suckling annointed from his tasting trials back in 1988 and 1989. Some people are ready to drink the Ports that are as old as his book and retail shops, auction houses etc ... are still using those TNs. I loved his book as much as the next Port guy, but come on now.

Although I'm new to the Port world , I'm learning just by reading everyones TN's .
Unfortunately , living in Montréal , the SAQ tends to put a damper on the ability to get high quality VP . ( As Fred can attest )

Yes, the Mayson book is a fun read and an even better reference book. It was also nice to see Roy mentioned a couple times in the text (about a 2003 tasting in Seattle, I believe?)

I have first edition copies of the book, one from Richard directly. But neither one contains mention of the tasting that I hosted (and invited Richard to attend) almost four years ago.

It was a lot of fun to say the least.

Both are great books.

Derek gave me an old copy of Suckling's book on the Harvest Trip, as I had never read it before. Gosh, it was wierd to read it and see how much had changed since it had been written.

Roy,

2004 revised edition, Chapter 7, pg 215

"...I tasted a bottle of Taylor 1912 at Roy and Doreen Hersh's port weekend in Seattle in 2003..."

one of a couple mentions.

Jeez, I already own 2 copies of this book, but earlier editions. I just don't know if it is worth obtaining a 3rd in order to see my name in it. Nonetheless, thank you very much for even alerting me as to the mention.

He added a chapter that discusses the future of Port. So buy the new edition for that, if not for vanity !
