Any information about 1959 Madeira?

Post by John Danza »

Hello all,

I'm in the midst of planning the wines for my 50th birthday dinner in 2009, and starting to acquire them now. I would like to work in a Madeira from 1959 for one of the courses, either a Sercial in an early course or maybe a Bual for a cheese course. However, I don't know anything about the 1959 vintage in Madeira. It was great throughout Europe, but was lousy in Portugal.

Does anyone know how the 1959 vintage was in Madeira, and if there are any recommendations for madeiras from that year?

Thanks much.
John

At the very least I can tell you that there was vintage Madeira produced in 1959... check out the outstanding vintage list at the Madeira Wine Guide web site:

Unfortunately I have not had any of them...

Thanks very much for the info. I'll keep on the lookout for these. I don't see them in Wine Commune nor are there any in the U.S. in Wine Searcher Pro. I'll have to check worldwide in Winer Searcher.

Hi,
I'll be a 50 09'er myself. I've managed to collect quite a few 1959's but have never run across a Madeira.

Reidar
Is there an easy way of getting these imported into the U.S.? I work with a vendor who also does importation, but I've never approached them about bringing in a small number of bottles for me. Is this the best way to go?

Thanks,
John

you might try the direct-sales email at the madeira-wine-company, but you have to keep in mind, that the U.S. are a little tight about importing alcohol. may be best to hand this email address to your local wine-importer and ask them to do the job for you. or even better to import it yourself by spending a week or two on madeira island:)

1959 Madeira

And?! How was 1959 as a vintage?
I have a couple of 1959 Blandy's Bual to spare and would happily consider a trade. Located in Edmonton, Alberta but am travelling to San Diego in a couple of weeks and to Seattle later this spring.

Eric,

You will be able to buy 1959 bottles directly when you are on the upcoming trip in May. Bring a styro shipper!!!

Looking forward to meeting you.

Peter,

It is great to have you join us here. I am very pleased to see you and look forward to your next visit to your brother. We'll have to repeat our lastest episode.

Richard,

I would not imagine that 1959 was so great in terms of the vintage itself, at least not from the growing conditions that year.

For those looking for 1959s, I strongly suggest you look to German Riesling, Barolo, Burgundy and Bordeaux ... all of which excelled in that particular vintage.
