So it seems to me they should be protesting the high costs of French red tape. If wine is being sold as one thing that actually is another, that should be addressed. But if other places can make wine much more cheaply than France, that's a different issue.... Spain and Italy, where lower social charges and less red tape enable producers to sell their goods more cheaply.

I disagree that those particular rules should necessarily apply to all. However, it should be prohibited for non-conformant wines to indicate where they are from. Or for that matter, even what grape they are. I mean, who really cares where vin rouge comes from or what it's made of? People don't buy Two Buck Chuck because it's a California wine. (Is it? I don't even know.) They buy it because it's two bucks. You can trace our wine from the vineyards to the bottle and those same rules should apply to all.
However, it should be clearly indicated that the non-conformant wines do not conform to French wine standards and that their provenance cannot be guaranteed. The French winemakers could then use that to their advantage in marketing campaigns. It's hard to ban things. It's much easier to make them undesirable.

A. yes, i think Two Buck Chuck is made in CA. but they buy surplus grapes, and that might be from the entire West Coast.Glenn E. wrote:People don't buy Two Buck Chuck because it's a California wine. (Is it? I don't even know.) They buy it because it's two bucks.
B. being two bucks isn't the entire reason people buy it. ...it may be the reason most people buy it, it's why i buy it. but the thing that makes it notable is that it's a very consistent wine, it doesn't vary from batch to batch or year to year, and considering that they make it from surplus grapes, that's actually pretty impressive. consistency, even at low quality, is pretty difficult. but it's very important to people who don't know about or don't want to bother with looking into what they're drinking. the same can be said for Budweiser or even Lipton's tea. people who appreciate the good versions of wine, beer, or tea turn their noses up at these cheap, not very good ones, but Joe Schmoe wants to buy these things like soda pop: a product with a consistent flavor every time.

The French need to look themselves in the mirror and what is right to protect their industry. If French wine is going to mean something, take control of it.
