Re: What Madeira Have You Opened This Week?
Purchased this for my 40th birthday 5 years ago. Pour a small glass on my birthday and for any significant events in my life.
Big promotion yesterday at work, so out comes the 1875.... :)

A couple of days ago, I opened 14 bottles, 2 of which were mine ... mostly old and ancient ones. An impressive sight and smell.

1971 Terrantez and 1900 Malvasia, both D'Oliveiras and both for this weekend's Madeira gathering.
At first I liked the smell of the Terrantez better, but the Malvasia has been evolving and is now my favorite. Can't wait to try them!

1916 Barbeito malvasia (bottled in 2005) on 1 July in observance of the centenary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. We also had a two burgundies and and a spatlese, but the madeira was the star of the show.

I lke it very much, especially with a few years in the bottle. It is a little richer and not so dry. I still have 4-5 bottles left, but would buy more for a good price.
Also, I have a bottle of the colheita version, bottled in 2003. I plan to taste it side-by-side with a regular bottle.

1948 Barbeito malvasia
Bottling date unknown. No back label. This bottle is clean, moderately sweet, with a touch of lime. It needs a few more days to open up enough for me.
I last had this in 1998. It was very good at that time. Somewhere around 1999, the Wine Spectator gave it a 95 (I think) rating in a tasting of several madeiras provided by RWC.
