2014 declaration

Post by Jasper A. »

I think it is time to start a topic about which producers will declare a 2014 (Single Quinta) vintage port.

Declaring:
- Quint do Crasto
- Ramos Pinto
- Quinta do Javali
- Quinta Vale D. Maria
- Quinta do Vale Meao
- Pintas (Wine & Soul)
- Churchill's
- Quinta do Noval
- Quinta do Passadouro

Will update the list when I know more. If anyone knows more, please mention.
I don't think much vintage port will be made of this year, because last year the declaration news started in April

Just for reference. The Ramos Pinto vintage is a single quinta from Bom Retiro.

No Vesuvio? It must have been a pretty bad year for them then, as they declare 70-80% of the time, if memory serves.

That is what the dutch importer told me. So the harvest might have been a little to late.

It was a wet and cool year up to harvest. Then the rain came at harvest. And the wind didn't when the rain stopped. Some really good grapes early on, but many weren't phenologically ripe yet when the rain hit. So if they didn't declare it I'm not surprised. That's a pretty generic view of the vintage as there was so much diversity depending on where one was located. One Quinta could have gotten lots of rain and another nearby got less.

That said, some did get some fine grapes in and no doubt there will probably be some very nice Ports made. Really is a vintage one has to look and evaluate each Port on a case by case basis. No blanket assessments for 2014.

Was looking around for vintage notes on this year and came across these producer vintage reports. A pretty good read where you can really see how different parts of the Douro got hit with different weather. Granted, some you'll have to read between the lines a bit more than others.

If you scroll down you'll see the ones from the Douro.

Vesuvio try to declare a vintage port every year but, like Yquem, will miss a vintage if they don't feel the wines are up to the required quality. Since their first vintage in 1989 they have missed 1993, 2002 and now 2014.

Seems like it will only be a case of Ramos 2014 for my daughters birth year. I had hoped for a better year :)

Wow, that's weird to not have 750's.

For those who are young, why not save your hard earned case on 2015 VPs which will be out next spring in what I believe will be a very broad and general declaration?
Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com

Hello,

It has been announced that Quinta do Noval declared 2014 vintage as well.

My daughter was born two years ago and I can't wait for my next visit to Portugal do purchase a nice set of 2014 vintages! Prices in Brazil are outrageously high, so, I'll have to wait a little bit.

Regards,

Rodrigo
