Thanksgiving VP: 1977 Taylor Fladgate or 2011 Dow's?
My dad's flying out, and my sister+family is driving up from LA, so I thought I'd serve something special for Thanksgiving. Basically, 2.5 of all of us will be imbibing.
For the non-port wine, I've wanted to try the 2009 Pontet-Canet for ages, so I finally pulled the trigger and got an auction bottle.
For the port, I also got a 1977 Taylor Fladgate from the same auction house, but now I've miraculously secured some 2011 Dow's, and am having a hard time deciding. I know it's nowhere near ready, but I'm also keen on trying it as well.
Which one would you serve, and any suggestions for stand/decant times for either? Thanks!

Do you have more of the 2011 than the '77?

I'd serve the 77. For me, at least, an older VP goes better with turkey & the trimmings.

I bet the '11 Dow would be fun with the turkey, but I cannot advocate cradle robbing!
I would open both vintages. The Dow like on Monday or Tuesday and drink up till turkey day as more a way to see how it develops.

While both are nice bottles, for me, it would come down to what I've not had before. If you've not had the 2011 then you should try it at least once in its youth. Give it a long decant, at least 12 hours or more, if you do.Peter Handel wrote:Yep, I got a case of the 2011.Andy Velebil wrote:Do you have more of the 2011 than the '77?

Agh, they just cancelled my 2011 Dow's order! :-( Was really hoping to cellar a case of this.
