Warres 20, Otima/Not Otima

Post by Bradley Bogdan »

I've seen the Warres Otima offerings for its 10 and 20 year offerings, assuming that that was their only TWIOA at the 10 and 20 levels. Turns out, that's not correct! They apparently still bottle a "standard" 20 year in a 750ml bottle as well. Trying them side by side, definitely different wines, so why the multiple concurrent bottlings?

Despite my best googling, I haven't been able to come up with an answer. The Warres website doesn't even acknowledge the standard 20 year, just the Otima line, even though both bottles I picked up were bottled in 2014/2015. Any thoughts?

This is not news that they produce both, but honestly, I've never thought it was odd, or questioned the rationale. Good question and I am sure someone will be able to do the sleuthing or know the reason. I do remember when the Otima was first launched. I believe it was early in the 00s, but I do not remember exactly which year, but not that long ago ... maybe 15 years or so. I've never been much of a fan of the 10 year old Otima, but the 20 is really nice. OTOH, I like both the 10 and 20 year old Warre's Tawny Ports. Go figure.
