1997 Niepoort Vintage Port

Post by Eric Menchen »

Tasted blind. Aroma of VA and acetone. Lots of tannins and lots of body. Better than the wine that followed (which had TCA), but still not scored.

I didn't write down a guess of Niepoort for this one, but I think the VA made Niepoort the guess of most people in the room.

That was a shame. Hope the one we shall taste will be in good form. This really is great when it is fault free.

And very rare to find one fault free, unfortunately.

I had one is 2014 and it was quite good. Opened because it started to leak.

I had a whole bunch of 375s of this. Most had some VA, but it usually wasn't so strong that I couldn't drink it. I can handle a little bit.

I've gone through almost two cases over the years, about 1/2 of those were .375's and the rest 750's and a couple of mag's. All but one had very noticeable, but variable amounts, of VA. Very sad as it's a stellar VP when there is no VA on it. Reminds me of the 1983 Cockburn's :(

I've only opened a few myself, but mine have generally had some level of VA present. Even the best bottles have had it at least faintly notable. But like Eric I'm not immediately or automatically put off by VA, so even the level that was in this bottle isn't necessarily a problem for me. This bottle was getting pretty close to my tolerance level, but lighter levels are perfectly fine. I gave this bottle 92 points and in my notes estimated that without the VA it might have scored 95.
