1970 Fonseca Vintage Port

Post by John Danza »

  • 1970 Fonseca Porto Vintage - Portugal, Douro, Porto (12/20/2017)
This bottle had been decanted 18 hours prior to service. Medium red color with a clear rim. Still a bit of alcohol bite. Good flavors of fig, blackberries, and chocolate truffle, with the sweetness very balanced with the acidity. Paired perfectly with the Stilton served with it. An excellent wine at full maturity but with the power to stay at this level for at least another decade before starting a slow decline. (93 pts.)

John,

May I ask you a favor please. Next bottle you open of the 1970 Fonseca, please only decant for 6-8 hours and then drink the bottle with your wife or a friend. See if it performs better than what 18 hours of decanting did. I believe you will find it will present greater harmony with 10 (or so) less hours open.

I actually don't have any Roy. This was a friend's bottle that he opened at a luncheon. I thought it pretty good, given the aeration time.

I will probably drink mine in a week or two and i think i will open the bottle (decanted) about 3 or 4 hours and drink it slowly with my wife for another 3 hours.

Cool! Although I recently opened one, by the time we see one another again at some point in 2018 ... it will be good to try another, up against another 1970, or two.
