1958 Martinez Vintage Port

Post by John Danza »

Popped and poured by the host of a luncheon I attended yesterday. The bottle had a great fill, firmly into the neck.

Initial impressions: Brownish red color. Alcohol heat was pretty strong. Held off at this point to give the wine some chance to come together.

After 15 minutes of swirling: The heat has died down, converting more to a good acid that is typical for a wine, providing a good backbone with the moderate tannins. Nice dark fruits with light sweetness. The wine continued to evolve, showing layers of berry fruits.

Overall, the wine is still very healthy and can give another decade of good drinking. The wine would have shown so much better if it had been given 2-3 hours of air before service.
