Old Ports from the CASA DO DOURO up for grabs...

Post by Christian Gollnick »

The IVDP has posted information about the sale of old Port stocks from the defunct CASA DO DOURO. Unfortunately you have to be a registered "Comerciante de Vinho Generoso (CVG)" or "Comerciantes de Vinho do Porto (CVP)" with the IVDP to be allowed to bid on the pipas.

The starting price for the 1934 Colheita is EUR 127 per liter.
The +40 (which is the Colheita 1963) is quite attractively priced at EUR 23 per liter.
The 20 Year Old Tawny is priced around EUR 5 per liter.

Considering how well picked over those stocks already are, anything that's left probably isn't all that great. Translated, if they were good someone would have already bought them.

That said, considering how much they had less than 10 years ago there is only a tiny amount left. Some years ago I walked into their building in Regua and they had a big chart which showed how much quantity from each vintage and it was a lot from a lot of different vintages. With a lot of white Port as well. I tried to get a picture of it but the security guard wouldn't let me. The whites are now mostly gone, go figure given how popular they've become and the scramble for producers to buy older stocks to meet demands. And from the link provided most of the red Port is also gone. So as I said, what's left is no doubt the bottom of the barrel (no pun intended) quality wise.

I've tasted the 63 in 2008 and it was simple at best. Those stocks can be interesting for producers who want to start a business or want to sell better stocks now. As a Producer you can only release 1/3 of your stocks every year.

Given how little is left, I at least suggest the possibility that some of the remaining pipas might be o.k. for quality, but not commercially viable in quantity. End of bin.
