London Portuguese Wine - Bar Recommendation

Post by Roy Hersh »

From a friend of mine from FTLOP tours, coming again during harvest this year. He was in PT and then London in February and recently sent me this info:

BA Wine Bar. Bairro Alta.

Has some 300 wines. About 100 available at any time. Anything B-T-G. All over PT. Very knowledgeable. Some obscure and older stuff.

Small place. 16 seats. Killer cheese plate.
Ambition driven by passion, rather than money, is as strong an elixir as is Port. http://www.fortheloveofport.com

When I read the subject, I thought this was a place in London. But now I presume we are talking about this place in Lisboa:

Very timely post. I'll be in Lisbon in about two weeks... with my hotel just a couple a blocks away, this will definitely be on my to-do list. Thanks!

Just got back from here.
It's a seriously geeky Portuguese wine bar. But it's tiny and reservations are a must. I was lucky and there was a last minute cancellation so I got in, but in the two hours I was there, over a dozen groups were sent away. Reservations can be made online at [email protected]. Tel 351 21 3461 182. They open at 6 pm. A lot of wines from all regions in Portugal and some old ones as well. The only food available are charcuterie, cheeses, the famous canned Portuguese seafood. The only hot food is grilled sausages. You can get an entire tour of Portuguese wines there. I managed to talk the proprietor into selling me a bottle of the 1992 Herdade do Mouchao to take home.

So the BA Wine Bar do Bairro Alto was closed when I was thinking about making reservations. Then rolling back into Lisboa I remembered it and stopped by. But they were fully booked that day, and I already had a reservation elsewhere for the next day. So instead, the next afternoon I went to a place I had discovered back in 2015, the Wine Bar do Castelo. Review from that trip here:
https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserRev ... tugal.html
It is still as good, although the queijo de Serra da Estrela wasn't as gooey this time.

Then I noticed this, the two business cards:

The backs of the cards are similar in design too, and there is a common employee name that works at both.
