Crazy sale at Garrafeira Nacional

Post by Eric Menchen »

So yesterday I went to GN Santa Justa to fill up the remaining slots in my suitcase. Today I happened to be walking by their store on Rua de Conceição (Lisboa), only to discover they are clearing out all these old bottles, buy two and get 50% off. And while they are a gamble, the original prices are tempting for many. Warres Cavadinha is probably the one I most wish I could have bought (1996, 49€ and then 50% off). The Fonseca Bin 27s are magnums.

That's great. With the 50% off the GN prices are now in line with any other retailer.

The old Carcavelos I bought there was cheaper than I found it in Porto. And the Jose Maria da Fonseca Alambre 20 Anos Moscatel de Setubal I bought was $30. wine-searcher.com shows it for $27.90 in a shop in Madrid, $31.39 in Porto, and $49.99 in the US. So I'm happy with that.

But you should always compare prices. I'm sure they are making more than a pretty penny on some bottles.

The Alambre is by far the inferior 20 year old by JMdF. [dash1.gif]

The Roxo is WAY WAY better than that one. :munch:

But way more expensive! Still, I think it worth it. I love the 20 Roxo! That reminds me, I need to get more. 8--)

Eric M.,

As part of the Fortification Tour (IF you have any desire to go to Madeira before it is too late) we will also have some GREAT tastings next year in Setubal too! Come join us. It will be one of the the first two weeks of the month of May.

I'm not Roy, who can probably answer better.
But I've heard rumblings about the stocks of great old Madeiras running out.
