1997 Ferreira vintage port

Post by Rune EG »

This bottled was a gift given to me by a Portuguese business associate in 2005, and it has been in my cellar since then. In general, this port was very nice. The few reports I have seen are indicating that this port has a rapid development, which agree. If I had been served this port blind, I would have guessed vintage mid-1980s.

Decanted 5.5 hrs (it improved/opened up after 5 hrs). Some fine sediments. Medium red colour. Aroma of berries, minerals, and then some sweetness in the background (not defined). Full body. Powerful, plenty with berries and tannins (both in a good way), some oak and jam (including cherries and raisins). Well-balanced acidity/sweetness. A nice structured port which, although tasting like mid-1980s, is still having a wonderful freshness. Long aftertaste 93 pts.

I had this recently at a small Ferreira vertical with the 77, 87, 91 and 97.

I agree this 97 is doing well with a good balance between some maturation and still some vibrant youth. I was at 91 point for this and the 91 slightly ahead and the 77 miles ahead.

It is a great QPR at a very reasonable price.
