Re: FTLOP's OFFICIAL 2017 Vintage Port thread
It seems to be a universal truth that in every wine making region, the top products are priced most highly on the domestic market.
75 euros for Warre '17 puts it on a par with the UK auction price for Warre '77..

Re: FTLOP's OFFICIAL 2017 Vintage Port thread
Yes, unfortunately that seems to be more and more the case.
The fact that the market is arguably much smaller in Portugal can help explain it to a degree, but then again when selling in PT the houses also save on shipping costs, import taxes, etc.
Not even the fact that we have the lowest VAT on wine of the entire EU seems to be of much help in lowering prices.

We have the first 2017 vintage port also online. Bit cheaper then in Portugal.

Wow. 2 X what I paid for the 2016?? I hope not.Fred FS wrote:Graham's "The Stone Terraces": 200€
Re: FTLOP's OFFICIAL 2017 Vintage Port thread
Last year they were already at 180€. In 2015 at 170€. I bought them both, I hope I won't regret it.
Given the low yields of 2017, I'm not surprised they have raised it up to 200€

Re: FTLOP's OFFICIAL 2017 Vintage Port thread
The US and UK prices have held pretty steady for the 3 previously released vintages - basically $225 "retail" but you'll sometimes find a "discount" store selling them for less. I paid around 125 GBP when I bought 2016s last year. I got 2015s at anywhere from 100 to 150 GBP. I bought all of my 2011s in the US so didn't get to see what the UK prices were on release.Fred FS wrote:Last year they were already at 180€. In 2015 at 170€. Costco had some briefly in the Seattle area, which a couple of us drove around and snatched up. Total Wine gets them once in a while also.

Dow’s is offered “en primeur” here in Denmark @ 75€, 167€ for magnum and 313€ for ‘Tappit hen’.
All wine would be port if it could...

Re: FTLOP's OFFICIAL 2017 Vintage Port thread
Base price aside, the ratios are absurd. I can tolerate a 2% surcharge for magnums over bottles, but not that sort of uplift, and the Tappit hen uplift is just plain crazy..Andreas Nielsen wrote:Dow’s is offered “en primeur” here in Denmark @ 75€, 167€ for magnum and 313€ for ‘Tappit hen’.
Sorry, but this sort of pricing policy just makes me think: 'wait until they come to auction..'

Re: FTLOP's OFFICIAL 2017 Vintage Port thread
For highly allocated California wines it's not unusual to see a markup of 50% for magnums. But it's not Port.

Re: FTLOP's OFFICIAL 2017 Vintage Port thread
Was fortunate enough to attend a Port event in Houston today where Ramos Pinto, Niepoort and Rozes poured a total of 5 2017 VPs. I thought the Ramos Pinto VPs were very floral, clean in mouthfeel, and approachable, considering the massive youthful structure. The Niepoort was also rather approachable, but a bit more “classic” in terms of drying structure I’m used to in a baby VP. The Rozes wines, while good, were a step back than the others.

Re: FTLOP's OFFICIAL 2017 Vintage Port thread
I am heading to Portugal for nearly five weeks very shortly.
One of those weeks is for the Five Regions Tour. Another is at the end of the month, for my daughter, who is flying over to meet me and learn about why I am so crazy about Porto, the city; as she already knows why re: the drink. The other 3 weeks are to slowly taste through at least 5 or 6 dozen of the 2017 Vintage Ports. It is difficult enough to do this in June. I can only imagine what it was like for the journalists who have already done so, in late April and through mid-May.
