A flight of white

Post by Mike K. »

Poured myself a flight of white port tonight. It was an interesting exercise to narrow down what I like.

Dalva 20yo
Very little nose. OK mouthfeel, alcohol, subtle, not much flavor. 80 points

St. Eufemia 30yo
Light nose with hints of orange. Good mouthfeel with orange and apricot. Fruity and syrupy. 88 points

Kopke 20yo
Nose is subtle but pleasant. Nice mouthfeel, orange marmalade, caramel, vanilla. 90 points

Dalva 63
Darker nose than the Dalva 71 with burnt caramel, brown sugar, varnish. Rich dark palate, burnt caramel, vanilla, brown sugar. 92 points

Dalva 71
Strong nose of brown sugar, caramel, apricot, varnish. Huge and thick on the palate, lemon / lime citrus, fresh. Love the combination of richness but still fresh on the palate. 93 points

Not comparing with S. Leonardo whites as it wouldn’t be fair.

Cool tasting. I’m hit and miss on white Ports as there is so much variability of styles now that they’ve become trendy. You really have to taste them first, as you did, to sort which ones you like before buying in quantities.

As for yours, I like the older Dalva (Presidential) but I am generally not a fan of their younger ones. They are too dry and astringent IMO.
