Now I know why there were 117 posts on 28th February!

C'mon guys, you really need to organise an Offline. Let me know where and when and I will sit and take minutes. I can see better quotes coming out of the three of you meeting than we had last time in London. What was it that Nico and Nick said to each other?

Alex,
So we've got the reason, the characters, the Port expertise(Apart from me), the waffle, and now we've got a 'scribe'. I think all we're missing is a soundtrack. I was thinking, the music from Platoon, for dramatic effect, particularly as the last gulps of the night go down! Shame Andy cant just catch the number7 Bus! :D

And if its not to long...who's nico and nick?

Alan,

Nico Neocleus and Nick Alabaster are two frequent posters on eBob and infrequent posters here. They came to the inaugrual London offline I organised in November 2005. Both are extremely experienced wine tasters, people whose ability I respect very much and very nice individuals as well.

However, after 12 bottles of port, they got into a heated debate and there were some extremely funny things that they said to each other which had the rest of us in fits of giggles and Nick and Nico looking at us as if we were mad.

You can find the thread here http://www.fortheloveofport.com/ftlopfo ... on+offline

Alex,Derek,etc

I'm keen to take my adolescent love of port to a more adult level, by if possible, catching a night of Port tasting with you guys. If the venue is a problem, my house, decking and garden would be available. I'd like some idiot instructions as to which bottles of VP you'd want me to aquire on a sensible budget - (Say three in the £50 - £100 range). Plus that obscure Harveys 85, I've mentioned before, that may be ruined, and that would be my contribution. If you guys then brought a bottle or two, we'd be up and running. It would give me an idea of the difference in characteristics that inspire you guys. I'm still worried I'm one of those people who likes the stuff, but cant tell the subtleties of the finest VP's. This type of evening would tell me once and for all.
No problems if its too complicated to organise, but the offers there.

And now I know you've all got a Twilight side, please tell me you swallow, and dont spit out the gorgeous liquid sunshine...I'm coming to terms with glued corks and frozen grapes, but I'm not sure I could handle that!!! :)

Alan,

OK, I confess, I have been known to spit when I taste. The last time it happened I think I was spitting into a gully that ran across the floor of the fermenting room in one of the producers we visited. The producer was kind enough to provide us with a tasting of his 2006 vintage and the acidity in it brought tears to my eyes. It is amazing how much these wines change over time.

Most of the time I will drink the wines, but I'm always conscious that I have to pace myself and also get up the next morning.

I'm always up for a port tasting, the only trouble is that my time is rarely my own and we live so far from each other. Do you ever travel down to London? Derek does occasionally and I frequently have to work in London so trying to organise something sooner rather than later would probably have to be London based.

And if you know you like port but are worried that you can't tell the subtleties of the stuff - worry not. One frequent poster has a scoring system which goes along the lines of "Yum; Yum Yum; Yum Yum Yum; Delicious". It doesn't really matter anyway. You enjoy port, end of story.

Alan,

Like Alex I am always game for opening a few bottles of port but finding the time is always difficult. It took Alex and I 6 months to organise 1 night of port tasting last year

I am sure the opportunity will present itself at some point in the near future.

On which wines to open, this is something that requires extensive research and debate. I could send you the e-mail thread between Alex and I that contains the selection process for our tasting last summer but I am afraid it would scare you to death knowing the full extent of our "Twilight side"

Alternatively, use the link below to read the "official" story of the time that Derek and I met in August 2006.

Impressive!
Thats making me even more fed up that its proving difficult to organise your next one. I was born in 63, and I've never tasted a VP from that year yet. Seeing you both go for different 63's as your favourites, made me sigh. I've been looking them up on the Net and they're expensive swines! Clever idea with the 'Better Halfs'. I'd just be terrified of mine suggesting shopping!
And Derek, that seemed the right amount of Geekyness. Got a little worried about the copyrighted Table mat, but you both recovered it well. :D
