1985 Royal Oporto Vintage Port

Post by John M. »

Purchased from a fellow FTLOPer. Faded rose petal red towards the brown side, it was cloudy. The aroma was a bit sour and off putting and the first sip made me think it was flawed with a stewed fruit quality. But the second and third sips were vastly improved and the Port sang its modest praises. A little earthy and a touch of heat on the end; there were fore hints of cherry pie and a little grass. Certainly different, weirdly and mildly complex; all of us enjoyed it after running the gauntlet of the first taste. Overall a lower end Port. Drink now.

I just had this same wine over the weekend. I largely agree with you- this Port really needed to be decanted early. Earlier than most. This took about three hours to lose the edge, and then became lovely. Was a good bargain too.
Best,
Andrew
