1999 Quinta de Roriz

Post by John M. »

Decanted for 3 hours, but the bulk tasted a day later when it was much improved. Cork was fine, abundant fine sediment. Darker purple than it should be, very clear rim, but color appears as if elderberry juice added (it also tastes of this juice--I recall a tasting in NYC of Port with this color spectrum where we suspected an additive of berry juice to improve color). A bit simple for a VP, it still drinks easily and well with floral nose and tastes of red berries and straw with an odd almost bitter finish; moderate weight. On 2nd day this Port hits its mark and finished smooth and soft. Purchased in 2010. Not sure what the aging potential is, probably good now and for the next 15 years.

For many years this was my "recalibration Port" that I used to keep my scores consistent. I almost always rated it in the 88-90 range like you have, so every couple of years I would try one to make sure that my scores weren't inflating.

I think I still have 1-2 left somewhere in one of my fridges...
