To buy or not to buy

Post by Jasper A. »

I am looking into a special bottle, but i have no experience with a Noval Nacional form this vintage. Pricing is decent, so what to do?

The only thing that gives me pause is the wax. I’ve never seen a Nacional with wax before.

Where is this being bought from? Is there a paper trail as to it’s background?

If all checks out it should be a very nice bottle.

The wax is old at least.

Looks weird.

1) wax looks like that on some "ancient" bottles I have recently seen and which in my eyes were fake
2) the selo would have been a JNV (Junta Nacional do Vinho) in the end of 1940ies...this looks to me like an adopted IVV (Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho) seal.
3) the wax looks (which doesn't necessarily/automatically mean that it IS) old

All these points should be taken into account given the name of the owner/provenance. But I learned in collecting over 20 years: the seller of such wines is the most reliable factor.

Thank for all the comments.

I decided not to bid on the bottle. The risk is just to big and the shape of the bottle isn't that great.
