Wine shops on Madeira

Post by Mike K. »

Are there any recommended or must-visit wine shops around Funchal? The producer gift shops are certainly a good start but what about hunting for non-current bottlings, or producers that have gone out of business? For instance - a bottle or two of Artur de Barros e Sousa would be fun.

Thank you!

ABSL is almost impossible to find now. There was a shop near the waterfront in Funchal some years ago that had a good selection, but when searching for it again (multiple times), they no longer seem around. I've heard that all the ABSL was bought up a few years ago. You might ask at d'Oliveiras if they might sell some. They're refurbishing the old ABSL lodge but am unsure when it will be reopened. Garrifeira Nacional in Lisbon has a few bottles, but they are very, very expensive.
