Kopke 40 y.o. Tawny vs. Kopke over 40 y.o. Tawny. Any difference?

Post by Mike J. W. »

I just picked up a Kopke over 40 y.o. old Tawny and I'm wondering if it really is any different than a regular Kopke 40 y.o. Tawny or if it's merely a marketing gimmick?

It's just bottles intended for different markets. As I recall, US bottles have different labels by law.

There's no difference in the contents, and no marketing intent by Kopke.

Thanks for the clarification Glenn. I didn't realize there were different labeling laws in the U.S.

I'm looking forward to trying it down the road.

Do yourself a favor, pick up a Kopke 1978 Colheita, and do a side-by-side with the 40.

It should be every producer that imports directly to the US (and ergo prints their own labels for the US) because it's a US law that causes the difference. "Grey market" bottles that were originally shipped elsewhere and then imported to the US by a 3rd party would not have these labels, but would have the ubiquitous "strip label" added to them that indicates the US importer.

As I recall there's another country in Europe that has the same label requirement as the US... maybe Denmark? [shrug.gif]
