1997 Quinta do Vesuvio VP
Decanted at 3 p.m. Cork came out more easily than desired, but still had about 1/4" dry. Aroma at this time was very fruity, with red currants. Small pour at 7 p.m. with dinner was fruity and powerful. Empty glass had aroma of rosewater. At 10:30: big aroma of blueberry, with leather and sweet flowers, esteva, and strawberries. Medium to heavy body, with a warm lingering finish. In between, tangy, fruity flavors with a bit of herbaceousness as well. Acid tastes of orange citrus. Flavor has a bit of red taffy. Despite the overall power, the tannins are light. The body is getting a little lighter with time, but still is in the medium range. Pairs o.k. with a Merlot bellevitano, great with Brugge Comtesse and Humboldt Fog cheeses. Next day: floral, leather, and berry aromas. Still warm in the finish, but initially more brooding in the mouth. Fruity, with orange, cherry, raspberry, blueberry. Now more approachable than that first sip this evening. Day three: Still big and strong, but also a little oxidized and more medicinal, with a cherry Sucrets character. On the first day, I thought this was 93-94 points. On the second day, I was fine in the 94 court, and wondered if it still might improve. Maybe it did for some moment, but when I finished it off on day three, it was past its peak. So this needs more than 7 hours of decant, but there is no surprise that three days, even when poured back into the bottle, is too much.
