What have you opened this week?

Fonseca bin 27, which I brought to a party where it surprised me by being a great hit! No one there was a regular Port drinker or very knowledgeable, but apparently some have a few VPs at home, so I'm surprised they didn't know bin 27 or Reserve Rubies at all. Might be they only know about/ look at the high end bottles because they don't think Reserves can be any good. I'm very pleased to have proven otherwise. Several people took pictures of the bottle so they can buy it later.

Bin 27 is a very nice Ruby Reserve. Glad they liked it...keep spreading the Port

Celebrating the birth of my daughter Hollie with a glass of 1997 Warre's VP.

Silky smooth entry with herbaceous scent, jammy fruit and a nice firm backbone of tannins and acidity. This is a great port which will grow old and become outstanding. 93 points today.

1991 Croft VP. Decanted at 3:30, back in the bottle at 4:30 to travel, consumed around 8:30 or so and very tasty then. There was one glass leftover for the next day, and it was excellent, suggesting more decant time would be better next time.

Ferreira Duque de Braganca 20 Year Old Tawny. This is a very nice 20 year old. It sort of reminds me of a Burmester 20 year old, but the Burmester is sweeter and candied whereas the DdB is slightly richer and more serious. Both are very easy to drink, but the Ferreira is a more well rounded 20 year old.

Offley '72

What a charming little curiosity this vintage is turning into. Never a heavyweight, but with an elegance all of it's own. Sadly I only downed one glass on day one of the decant and it was getting a little jammy on day two, but still very agreeable.

I had a decent weekend of port. Friday night was 1985 Taylor and 1985 Fonseca vintage. Fonseca was a cut above, but the Taylor was better than I thought it would be.

Saturday night I opened '66 Noval and '70 Dow. Both were about equal, but much different tasting. At first I thought the Noval would be just so-so due to fairly clouding looking into the decanter, but had a rocking nose.

1968 Krohn Colheita

Filtered and decanted 4 hours early then rebottled. Best bottle so far I've had. More gold/burnt sienna in color than other bottles that showed more orange hues. Crystal clear, where others tend to be slightly cloudy. Smelled like a 40-50 Y/O madeira and tasted like a from Tinta Negra. Very expressive and clean.

I’m guessing we aren’t getting them until cooler weather. No way you can ship in this heat unless it’s cold chain shipping and even that can have issues

As soon as I received the last e-mail update from them, I replied indicating that unless things happened really fast, they should wait until the fall. Too late now.

1960 Quinta do Noval and 1977 Gould Campbell - both very good but the Noval was the clear winner.

Recently also tonged the top off a “mystery” old Warre VP and found it to be a 1945! Which was nice.

And 1960 Noval is quite good. It went through a rough spot some years ago but came back around and is lovely again.
