Taylor Fladgate Vintage 1992

Post by LOUISSS J »

Tomorrow I am going to open a Taylor Fladgate 1992 and I want to decant it about 5 hours before tasting it.. Then I will drink the bottle for another 4 hours.
Is the decanter time sufficient?
Thanks

I would normally say to give it a bit more air than that, but since you'll be drinking it over a 4-hour span that's probably about right and you'll get to enjoy it as it changes in the glass. It would be useful for your own purposes to at least make mental notes (if not written notes) of when it tastes best so that you have a decant-time reference for future bottles!

That's an excellent Port. It's one of my favorites. Enjoy!

The port was excellent. He was swinging between raisins, chocolate / caramel, maple cream and date. Nice creamy texture without being dense with a nice acidity that holds everything together.
It was at its best about 7-8 hours after opening. But in my opinion the most important factor was the temperature I was taking it at (and the room temperature). He was at his best in the basement ... so I mostly drank the Port in the basement. 8--)

The Port was excellent without being perfect. However, my expectations were very high.
I still have 3 more bottles. The next one should be taken in about 10 years.

This is excellent information. 7-8 hour decant, serve very slightly chilled. Thanks!

The Taylor '92 (and Fonseca '92) was the only time I ever bought a case of Port even though it was mixed. It was my daughter's birth date. Of like all things that happen in the wine world you're only on top for so long. When the '92 came up the vintage had a very good rating. But then comes the '94 and that was even better. :)

I didn't care because I didn't buy it for the rating and it was only a few points different anyway. I still have 2-3 bottles of each. That's because my family only likes dry wine, so it takes a while for me to restit and then drink it.
