Vieira de Sousa 40 Year Old Tawny Port

Post by Stewart T. »

Bottled in 2020. Amber-brown in color with some light yellow on the edges. Subdued nose of old wood, spices, and some citrus notes. There is a mustiness to this wine that may suggest that this bottle is off. It happens. N/R.

Agree. Something was not right with this bottle. It wasn't corked, that any of us could detect, but there was something wrong with it that none of us could quite figure out. Perhaps the bottle wasn't totally clean when it was filled or it was the bottom of the vat that was bottled and it had a tiny bit of dregs that tainted it [shrug.gif]

I think it was corked. It got worse over the next few days and I dumped it :( :(

Total. Bummer, but that would explain. Must have been very low level, as no one easily detected it that day.

Makes sense. Everything seemed so muted.

Andy's usually a pretty reliable TCA canary, though, so if he didn't notice it then it had to be really low level. And at that low of a level, would it really affect the flavor? (Think no-decant 1983 Cockburn which is often wonderful, but then turns foul after 3-5 hours when the TCA shows up. Or so I've been told.)
