SAMMAMISH CHRISTMAS TASTING - Sammamish, Washington (12/11/2021)
  • 2008 DR White Colheita - Portugal, Douro
Light golden color. There are candied white peaches on the nose with a touch of banana and tropical notes. Rich texture with honey and a light touch of maple syrup. Good balanced acidity and sweetness on the finish. (94 pts.)
  • 1963 Kopke Colheita Port - Portugal, Douro, Porto
Bottled in 2013. Cloudy amber-orange in color. Cedar, orange spice, vanilla, evergreen, and some light medicinal notes on the nose. There are notes of caramel with bright, focused acidity but this wine has a muted overall flavor profile. (89 pts.)
  • 1964 Kopke Colheita Port - Portugal, Douro, Porto
Bottle in 2013. Clear, amber-orange in color. Light cinnamon and cedar on the nose. Lots of expressive acidity with noticeable tannins on the palate. There is a rustic quality to the finish on this wine that slightly takes away from the overall rich finish. (91 pts.)
  • 1965 Kopke Colheita Port - Portugal, Douro, Porto
Bottled in 2015. Light sediment in the glass. Amber-orange in color. Nose of lemon, with some nice touches of old, aged, oak wood. Well-balanced, complex flavors of spices, toffee, and nuts on the palate. It has a really nice, long finish with balanced tannins and structure. (93 pts.)
  • 1965 Krohn Colheita Port - Portugal, Douro, Porto
Bottled in 2000. Very dark cola in color. Cola and some black pepper on the nose, along with blackstrap molasses and Bola de Mel (the traditional Madeira cake). Really rich and wonderful palate with a nice long finish. (94 pts.)
  • 1966 Kopke Colheita Port - Portugal, Douro, Porto
Bottled in 2019. There is buttered popcorn on the nose and a ton of acidity on the palate. This wine appears to be suffering from some slight bottle stink. (90 pts.)
  • 1967 Kopke Colheita Port - Portugal, Douro, Porto
Bottled in 2017. Clear, dark amber-orange in color. Caramel and creme brulee on the nose. Bright acidity. Nice long finish. (93 pts.)
  • Quevedo 40 Year Old Tawny Port - Portugal, Douro, Porto
Bottled in 2015. Aged barrel notes on the nose with vanilla and some smooth spices. Very smooth palate with amazingly rich notes of molasses and toffee. This wine is much more elegant and well-integrated than I am used to. I expected more dynamics but this is super elegant and integrated beautifully. (94 pts.)
  • Quinta de Brunheda 40 Year Old Tawny Port - Portugal, Douro, Porto
Bottled in 2021. Dark brown-amber in color. Some fun play doh on the nose at first sniff, which gave way to molasses and some nice vanilla and espresso notes. The acidity and balance are very nice. Long finish. (94 pts.)
  • DR L70 70 Year Old Tawny Port - Portugal, Douro, Porto
Bottled in 2017. Amber-brown in color. Velvet nose of caramel, herbs, and honey. Extremely rich, complex flavor profile of vanilla and orange spices. Extremely smooth, rich, and complex. A beautiful wine. (96 pts.)
