Opened in Florida with friends for a birthday celebration. The bottle was purchased at auction. Opened and decanted with cork intact.On opening it showed a reddish brown hue that made me think it might have been a little over the hill. WRONG! At 2 hours the nose was rich and flowery. The big reveal was the taste- an amazing balance of red fruit, a touch of caramel, and a little hint of chocolate. All of us thought it reminded us of liquified strawberry twizzlers ( we love strawberry twizzlers!). The finish went on and on and on. It's astounding how a wine crafted over 70 years ago is so vibrant.
At 3 hours it seemed like it was getting a little out of balance, but by 4 hours we noticed that the flavors got more intense and the superb balance returned. It was a full orchestra of flavors.We were privileged to share such a special and historic wine with dear friends.Scoring was difficult because we did not have enough experience to know what a 100 point port would taste like. It might be this! But in deference to experience we settled on 98-99.
PS On Day 2 at 24 hours the red fruit faded a bit into the background and the caramel and mocha flavors were more prominent. It also coated the mouth more fully and the finish lasted forever. Amazing! Still a 98 (98.5?) at least.
