I have one left... it will probably be opened next year during one of what will probably be several 60th birthday celebrations.Andy Velebil wrote:Those were good.Thomas V wrote:My last old bottle of 40YO from Romaneira.

I've had the '82 Andresen Colheita before (it's good), but how was the 50YO Maynard's?

Burmester Ruby
Much better than the Taylor or Q. da Romaneira regular rubies.
Delicious smooth raspberry, almost no tannins yet well concentrated, low heat, modest acidity. Missing a long finish of course, but this is well-crafted - no sign of "leftover" grapes. Not for beginners, as they are sure to drink too much of it!

LBV 2018 from Niepoort, really nice QPR, same with Andresen 10 years old white, probably the best out there.

Re: What have you opened this week?
1964 Casa do Douro Colheita, bottled 2003.
They've improved somewhat from the first bottles that I opened a couple of months after receiving them, which leads me to believe that they were suffering from a bit of travel shock at that time which has now settled down. Still won't win many comparisons, but it's a nice "daily drinker" in the low 90s now.

Look for the Barao de Vilar 10 y.o. white if you can find it. I think it's better than the Andresen.Frederick Blais wrote: ↑Mon May 01, 2023 5:36 am LBV 2018 from Niepoort, really nice QPR, same with Andresen 10 years old white, probably the best out there.

I'll try again, haven't tasted it in a very long time. Shouldn't be hard to find here in Porto :)Mike J. 1985 Offley Boa Vista. It was a leaker so it had to go.

Re: What have you opened this week?
My 50th celebration recently so last weekend had some port geeks down. Lots opened. A VERY partial list
1853 Reserve King Pedro V
Brunheda Chapel Lodge Cask 51
1944 Royal Oporto Colheita
1947 Messias Colheita
1973 Quinta da Davesa tawny (called Finest white Reserve as they can’t legally call it a 1973. But a blend from two tonels from 1973).
1963 Martinez VP
1970 Dows VP
1934 Dalva Colheita (b 1973)
1994 Vesuvio VP
Kopke 50 yr white port
1973 Vinho do Velho do Douro “Berco do Vinho do Porto” port. This was a gift to me from Dirk N. A few years ago as it was my birth year and not much is available from it. Very generous of him).
1980 Morano VP… never heard of it, never seen it before I bought it as a one off. Not great but not bad.
A bunch of dry wines and I’m missing some ports.

Krohn 10 YO Tawny
Better than the Ferreira 10 YO I had last which was on the bitter side, this is slightly too acidic but has lovely apricot and steak myoglobin. I enjoyed it at basement temperature, but it was very warming, it should be lovely in the winter and with a meal.

That looks like a crazy good line up. Which one was the best? Were any of them a surprise as far as their taste? And Happy Birthday Andy.Andy Velebil wrote: ↑Fri May 05, 2023 3:31 pm My 50th celebration recently so last weekend had some port geeks down. Lots opened. A VERY partial list

Re: What have you opened this week?
Bulas 20 year old tawny, lots of caramel, well balanced in acidity
DR 2008 white colheita, great, lots of fruit, my wife's favourite
Two totally different port wines. Tasting both of them within a five minutes period was a big mistake..

1983 Graham VP. Much more powerful than I expected given the age, reminding me that I'm in the camp that thinks 1983 can be just as good as 1985. (Obviously this varies from label to label, but I think 1983 deserves more credit than it is given.)

Re: What have you opened this week?
Hard to say as many were very good in their own right. I was shocked at how well the Dalva showed being bottled so long ago. I assume it had a decent amount of white grapes in it as the perceived acidity was still very high. The Vesuvio has finally totally come back round out of its awkward phase and is just a killer young complex VP again. It will outlive me by a long ways, that's for sure.Mike J. I will say, if you run across a 1980 Morano "Golden Orb" VP just keep running. Ok ok, it wasn't that bad, but not worth buying a second time. Granted it was basically free as part of a mixed lot.
