One year ago , to this day , no members were added to FTLOP . . .

Luc's posting led me to think of a slightly different thought on this theme. One of the things that I love to do is to put the port that I am drinking into the context of the historical events that happened in the year the grapes were growing and were harvested.
For example, in 1994 some of the major events were:
- The Los Angeles earthquake struck California
- NATO forces invade the former Jugoslavia
- Nelson Mandela and the ANC win the general election in South Africa
- The Channel Tunnel linking France and the UK opens
- Tony Blair became leader of the Labour Party in the UK
- Shops became legally permitted to trade on Sundays in the UK
- The IRA declared a ceasefire in Northern Ireland
(Wikipedia is great for finding out what happened in a particular year.)
Does anyone else like to do this?

Yes it's quite fun to see what happened on the year in question - although Wiki tends to be packed with obscure Americana...
I'm drinking a '75 at the moment - the year that Margaret Thatcher became leader of the Conservatives, OPEC were holding the world to ransom, Harold Wilson was prime minister, it snowed in England on June 2nd (but then hit 90 degrees by the end of the month), Australia finally got colour TV and America were defeated in Vietnam..

Great idea.
Of course, if I can find that elusive 1976, I'll be able to smile satisfactorily and know that in that particular year, the most important event in MY world occurred - I was born!
