Magnum Virgin decanting 83 Graham advice

Opening a 83 Graham mag for tonite - I'd decant a 750ml 8 hours+ or so. How about for this Mag?

Embarrassed to admit I'm a Magnum Virgin!

It's my birthday, and I'll drink Port if I want to, Port if I want to, Port if I want to . .

I have no experience with this VP or a Mag.

Please post a tn to let us know how it goes and what you think of the wine.

Congrats on breaking your Mag cherry! (It is about damn time bro!)

In all seriousness, take it up to only 10-12 hours. I really like the '83 Graham's although none of my Mags are from that vintage. Do you have a Mag decanter?

Here is my last "well written" TN for the 83 Graham from 750:

Graham 83 26 may 2004 - 96 Points, and I'm feeling cheap and mean

Decanted 8+ hrs

Nose - a mixture of berries, primarily blackberries, raspberries, and a touch of strawberries

On the Palate, blackberry and raspberry, some vanilla. Quite sweet, like Graham should be. A bit of spicyness right after the intial attack. Even some blueberry on the finish.

After 12 hours of air, I'm picking up violets and strawberries and vanilla on the taste as well.

Maybe slightly spirity?? Not sure, my nose is a bit plugged tonite. I don't care! But regardless, this young and fairly primary Port sings to me. "drink me drink me drink me"

What more could you want in a youngish Port?? At least a case is my future!!!!

I've since had it together with the 85 and the 85 is shockingly better, although the 83 is still wonderful. I was overly generous with 96 points, or maybe the 85 simply gets a few more points??

From mag, with 8 hours of air, finished at 12 hours of air. Not as open as from 750. Extremely similar, except the violets and strawberries are not as prominent. A kick ass bottle nonetheless.

I've got one mag left - will give it a decade or two, unless the spirit moves me :)

I am glad you made it back here. I am sorry you didn't trust me and give it more air time, but at least it was still kickin' and I am sure your next visit to the Mag will be even better. I am in total agreement that the 1985 is considerably better than the '83 although I like that very much. But then again, we've already had that discussion awhile back.

Of course I trusted you! I wanted to decant longer, but went out for a couple of hours in the morning to buy supplies, and it became an extended trip.

Proper decanting time was not the priority for the wife and kids :)
