Was in Seattle in May and enjoyed another fine meal at Wild Ginger, where I removed from their cellar the last bottle of '94 Niepoort VP (very reasonably priced on the list @ $75 I believe).
Decanted for about 1.5 hours as the meal progressed. This wine was predictably heady, showing strong, but well-integrated spirit. The sommelier described the wine in terms of "blackstrap", but I differ. I felt the wine, though young in the grand scheme of things, was a touch more developed than I would have expected. Its sweetness was more along the lines of brown sugar than molasses. A definite strong cinnamon heart candy flavour emerged - the comparison heightened by the heat from the Port, echoing the heat one gets from these candies.
The wine continued to improve over the hour or so it took us to consume this treat.
If I'm scoring, it is a 91/100.
Cheers,
Blair
