2003 Vintage

Post by Derek T. »

Despite my grumblings elsewhere on the price of young VP can anyone tell me whether or not 2003 has arrived in the UK yet and, if so, who is currently selling/releasing it.

Thanks

Derek

I was at Portal and did a very extensive tasting of all VPs that Portal has ever done, in addition to all LBVs, white Ports and dry Douro red wines. The 2003 Portal was one of the two best of all Vintage Ports they have produced in my opinion. I like the 1999 second best. The 2003 Portal Vp and the 2003 Portal Plus VP are both very fine wines in the scheme of the overall vintage.

BTW, at the Croft Lodge in Gaia today, I saw the 2003 Croft VP selling at €60.

My sources have told me that the UK market will receive their allocations in January. For some reason, the USA and as I saw this past weekend, even Canada ... have already received many of the 2003s already. Why the UK gets it last and after the "hot" holiday buying season is beyond me. Maybe they want to spread out the cash inflow, or make the shipping logistics a bit easier.

While I have seen some show up in my local market (Roriz, Croft, Fonseca, Taylor) I still have not seen many others.

Also have not seen any retailers, even online, with Portal!
