I don't know how rare or expensive it is, but it will certainly have some value. You might want to look at the price list of The Rare Wine Company, Sonoma, California, to see their prices of comparable wines. Vinhos Justino Henriques (VJH) is well thought of and one of the larger companies, after the Madeira Wine Company. Sercial is the driest and most acidic of the classic Madiera varieties. You probably have a very fine bottle. Classically served with soup.

You may also want to look at the prices for Broadbent 1940 sercial. I think that it's the same wine

Off the top of my head (not comparing the price to the Broadbent which I feel is over priced) this bottle should be worth $200 or so in terms of comparative value. That does not mean that you might not find it selling for more though; I am just speaking to its relative qpr.

Wine Searcher shows one entry for Justino's 1940 Sercial at $250.

I was thinking of the old price for Broadbent and had thought that there might still be some left out there, but Wine Searcher shows none. I bought some earlier this year for $165.

I can tell you that auction wise it has been listed as $160 to $260 at todays market it would hammer down at about $500. Some people just like to toss around their cash! Actual hammer though I would guess $300.

Simon,

I've still got a large glass of this, waiting for you. It's been open a few months now, so it may be deteriorating. I just wished I liked it.
