madeira sercial 1940 V.J.H
Hi Can anybody help i have recently been given this madeira it was bottled in Feb 1996. I dont know much about this subject and wondered if anyone could tell me if it is very rare or expensive or any other info would be much appreciated. Thanks Susan

I don't know how rare or expensive it is, but it will certainly have some value. You might want to look at the price list of The Rare Wine Company, Sonoma, California, to see their prices of comparable wines. Vinhos Justino Henriques (VJH) is well thought of and one of the larger companies, after the Madeira Wine Company. Sercial is the driest and most acidic of the classic Madiera varieties. You probably have a very fine bottle. Classically served with soup.

Off the top of my head (not comparing the price to the Broadbent which I feel is over priced) this bottle should be worth $200 or so in terms of comparative value. That does not mean that you might not find it selling for more though; I am just speaking to its relative qpr.
