A nice pair

Post by Roy Hersh »

After a Burg & Bdx-athon in Colorado with my brother and his friends, we finished off the evening with a 1922 D'Oliveiras Boal Madeira that was followed by a bottle of 1863 Blandy's Solera Malvasia.

The dinner was at the restaurant: 240 Union which is located in Lakewood, CO. A mag of 90 Heidsick started off the night perfectly and we headed to white Burg then red and finally onto Bordeaux during the course of six food courses that were as impeccably cooked as they were served.

The 1922 was one of the better bottles of this I have had. A really fine showing due to the precision of the acidity which seemed more focused. Who wouldn't enjoy this?

The Blandy's from the "Gettysburgh" vintage exhibited some wild aromatics and a supple spine of acid along with a seductive VA nuance that won me over.

Formal notes will appear in the December issue of the FTLOP newsletter.

I've one bottle left of the "Gettysburg" solera. It's some pretty good stuff but I may wait awhile before I open it; especially since it's my last one.

Eric,

Do you know if these are still on the market and what their value is today?

Roy,

it is still available in some shops in Europe, starting from Euros 450,- up. There is also a Blandys 1863 Malvasia *Vintage*, starting from 600,-
I wonder if this was the same wine and they later used part of it to start a solera?
Best
Peter
PS:
If you want the shop's website, just contact me vie Email. I am still in the decision-making process for my visit to the U.S. first half of 2008, since my new job has become unbearable for me in my family with its 85+ hours per week. No more time for the family and for Madeira, can't go on like this...

Thanks for the info Peter. I must say that I am sorry to hear about your new job placing such insane demands on your time. You are too young to spend your life working and missing your favorite things ... especially your wife and children. Then there is Madeira of course.

I hope to see you again in a few months!

Roy,
I bought these at auction about 7-10 years or so ago. I think I paid about $150-200/bottle.
