2005 Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

Post by jon bricken »

After reading Roy's tasting notes about the 2005 ports, I was excited and when I saw this in my local wine shop I just had to try one.

From a 1/2 bottle.

I opened it and had a small glass and left the rest to decant for the afternoon (I can do this as I am recovering at home for a few weeks).

This wine is not dark it is black, black, black and does stain the glass.

The legs are incredible as to their width and length.

The nose is to die for, just a basket of fresh fruit with a hint of the alcohol but not too much to detract from the nose. You could just smell this for a long time without even taking a sip and be happy. It has that young sent but it is completely in ballance as most of the other 2005's which I have tasted, such as Bordeaux, Rhone's & Loire's. It seems to have a great growing season all over.

The wine just carresses the pallett with a overwhelming taste of berries, cherries and plumbs and the tannins are very refined and smooth for such a young wine.

The finish is incredible and beggs you to drink more.

Wow what a great young port much more approachable than the 2003's at the same stage.

Just when you think it is safe to taste young ports because you don't need to buy them (tehy will never mature in my lifetime), a wine like this comes along and totaly changes your mind about drinking young ports.

I am looking forward to trying more 2005's as them become available.
