Good news, found at the online version of Journal da Madeira: http://www.jornaldamadeira.pt/not2008.p ... 2008-01-17 after taking a look at http://www.port-blog.com (good blog for Port and Madeira, but unfortunately in German).
Translated from Portuguese:
Madeira wine increased its production by 12% in volume and almost 14% in profit in 2007, compared to 2006. These numbers were given by the Chairman of the IVBAM, before participating in a conference on wine and embroidery from Madeira island.
For the president of the Institute, this result is "very interesting", but it will be "difficult" to be achieved again in 2008, admitted Paulo Rodrigues. The embroidered sales also rose, reaching an increase of more than 6% last year. The chairman of the Institute considers that a "good" increase for a sector that had been on a steady decline over years.
Paulo Rodrigues regretted, on the other hand, that Madeira Wine is little known on the continent. "It is more known in countries like the United Kingdom and United States than in its own country where it is produced," he says.
Regarding the qualities of the wine, Paulo Rodrigues highlights the fact that this product is "unique, of high quality, with great tradition, great culture and great history."
They do not say, wether the increase is all TNM or other (noble) grapes. Anyway, regarding the discussion in the other thread about TNM x noble varieties, this offers a little hope...
Good news for Madeira wine lovers!
