Colheita Colour Question

During the last weeks I had 2 Colheitas which did not have a bright but a quite cloudy colour. Botteling was in 2007 respectively 2008. Would you say, that the cloudy colour is a fault? I did not taste anything wrong.

I have had two splits of Porto Kopke 1987 Colheita that were a bit cloudy, but as in your case I didn't taste anything out of the ordinary so I didn't give it any concern. The smell, taste, and finish all seemed normal... it was just a little bit cloudy instead of the normal clear.

I guess if I were judging or rating the wine I would mark it down for being cloudy since the norm is clear. But other than that it doesn't seem to matter.

Cloudiness comes from filtering or lack of!. The less your filter, more chance you have of getting your port cloudy. For me, normally, it is a quality and a sign that the winemaker cares... or he gave you the bottom barrel :D

I've also noticed that if an unfiltered wine is very cold it sometimes seems cloudy. Not sure why, but that could also be a reason.

I've also notived that Andy. I don't have the exact answer but too me it looks like glycerine molecules that attach other particules at low temperature to get big enough for the eyes to see them. It happens to me only with unfiltered wine of good concentration and richness and Douro has that. What is the most surprising is that at low temperature it looks cloudy with particules in it, a few mins later, its clear and no particules are showing in the empty glass.

Wines like Domaine Leroy and Casa Ferrerinha are almost always cloudy, it is a hint for blind tasting :D
