Multi: Graham's VP 1985 vs. 1994 /Croft 1977 vs 2003

Post by J. Bradley Rauch »

While new to tasting notes and all the lingo - plum, raisin, blackberry.. tannins, etc. recently I spent mothers day weekend at my inlaws family reunion - as my brother-in-law is getting married at the end of the month and I missed his bachelor party I brought the port for this weekend - first night's tasting included and 85 and 94 graham. decanted both bottels for at least six hours. It was unanimous the 94 trumped the 85 -- being a novice it was very apparent that the '85 was missing something vs the deep long lasting flavor of the '94 and it never seemed to open up.

Croft '77 vs '03 - -the '77 won out the second night and was a tie with the Graham '94 -- although the '77 croft was lighter in color and not as deep in taste as the 85 graham - the Croft '77 was still very smooth. It was the first time tasting a young port Croft '03 and the last :snooty: --- contrary to Roy's comments of trying young ports I'll choose to wait until the proper time -- it had little long lasting taste and i still have half the bottle.

the end of the month, the day before the wedding, we will be trying a Dow 1970 -- we'll see how that goes.

Excellent tasting notes and interesting conclusions. Thanks for sharing them. I am a big fan of the Croft 2003 and in a mini vertical at Croft less than 2 weeks ago, the unanimous decision was for the 2003, although the great bottles only went back to 1970. I am more surprised though that the 1985 Graham did not show well. I've never seen that happen before. Just goes to show that there are no great wines, just great bottles.

Your impressions are very much appreciated and I hope you will share more, especially that '70 Dow which is a rock star.

being a newbie we did notice the cork to be fully stained to the top with some evidence of sepage on the Graham 85 but the cork was not popping out. Could this have caused a bad bottle ?? Same was evident on the Croft 77 but it was still showed well.

J. Bradley,
Have no fear about being new to TN's, you did a great job comparing them and I thank you for posting them.

I would guess the Graham's was a bit heat damaged and that affected the overall performace of it. A shame because as Roy said its a very good bottle. I can see how you may not have liked the 2003 Croft. It is a bit of a monster and will no doubt be a great bottle many decades from now, but I am also perplexed at the short finish you mention. Its a bit early to start its shut down phase, so maybe just an off bottle???

I know I'm probably not suppose to have kept these after opening them this long (a little over a week) revisited what was left in the Grham 85 last night and on it's own was OK but still not as good as the others--- will revist the 2003 croft and see what I think
