Good prices on fine Ports w/ perfect provenance in the USA

One of my all time favorite CA retailers, the WineXchange in So. CA is a company that I have bought from for 15 years now. Deals like 1977 Fonseca @ $49 and '77 Taylor too back in the day.

Anyway, here are some that I handpicked out of this months mailer:

Delaforce 20 year old Tawny @ $27

1992 Dow's Colheita @ $26

1994 Dow's VP @ $80 (WS 97 pts.) - I had it a week ago and WOW!

2000 Quinta do Vesuvio - $60 - incredible wine from this producer

Last but not least ... a very fine and fun quaffer: dry red from the Douro that is well worth this price if you want to explore what a Douro red is all about, this is a fun place to start! 2001 Niepoort Vertente @ $18

Don't hesitate to buy a case of this, the price is very good. Its selling for 32$ can here in Québec and still I find it decent. With the Vertente Niepoort try to emulate a Claret, the 2001 is the perfect exemple that it is a success. Decant it 30 minutes before drinking it and serve this blind, people will think its a nice 2000 Cru bourgeois.

I've browsed through Winex in the past and it has a decent selection. One thing I've noticed though is that it seems nearly impossible (for me anyway) to find any Niepoort or Vesuvio ports pre-2000. I'd really like to try some of these that folks recommend as QPRs, but it seems that nobody in the US carries those two.

I've looked around the shops here in Northern VA and I haven't seen anything from those two brands anywhere (and even if I did, the prices would probably be inflated). Are there any online distributors that folks use that carry these houses that they could recommend?

At this point I'd be happy just to find a couple of half bottles just to try out.

I've just noticed a post by Roy on the marketplace website. Roy was posting about the Riedel glassware sale by the company in WA. Looking at their webite, they have some Vesuvio '95 for sale on their list.

you're right, those two labels are tough to find around here, let alone in half sizes, but if you're in Northern Virginia, Schneider's and Calvert Woodley in DC are definitely worth checking out. both list '97 Niepoort (and the latter also has the '00 Niepoort and Vesuvio both at $49.99 right now...). Central Liquor lists '96 Vesuvio, and Circle lists the '97 Vesuvio. I can't find anything earlier.

Mike, if you ever come to Quebec we still have the 95 through 2003 vintages in 750ml. Quantity are limited but they are not selling fast.

Alex, thanks for the offer. I've actually never been to the UK before. It's somewhere high up on my list of places to visit, but doubtful within the next few years, sadly.

Dave, I'll check those places out soon. I haven't ventured much into the DC area because of the holiday traffic lately, so hopefully after the new year things will get a little better.

Fred, I don't visit Quebec much anymore since I moved to VA. Used to make a trip there once or more a year to Montreal when I lived in Toronto. My parents are still in the Toronto area and are coming down in the spring, so maybe I can hit them up to see what's in the area. What are the prices like for those?

Mike, the off year declaration are around 75$ can and the classic declaration around 90$-100$ can.
