Wine Shop in Gaia

Post by João Rico »

As i was spending a few days in Porto (just arrived yesterday). As i was spending the sunday afternoon walking in Gaia entered in a Wineshop that really dazzled me. What a marvelous collection of Port (and not all is at sight). Lot's of older stuff. Like a 72 Vargellas that i wasn't aware that existed or a 69 Vargellas that even Taylor's doesn't have.
Well, if any of you can visit...

Garrafeira do Infante
Av. Ramos Pinto Store 450

This Wine Shop is in some kinda small contructions near the river in the Gaia Peer, a few meters before Ferreira.

If this is the shop that I think it is (in one of those new buildings along the river), it has a fantastic collection indeed. But the prices are completely over the top. If you think of insane prices, this is even a step beyond.

João, if you say that not all is at sight, do you mean that they have stock of the stuff they have in their shop (where it is warm and bottles are standing up) in a cellar? Last time I was there I asked, but they didn't seem to understand what I meant.

Sorry for the late answer Andy.

As Ronald Wrote, that's the shop he is describing. Huge prices but for me it was great just to see a incredible collection.

Ronald, the special things are not even in the wine shop. They keep those on the other side of the river. I really confronted the owner with the prices and the conservation, but he didn't thought the prices were scandalous and the wines were well kept. Go figure.
But for those who love Port, i thing this shop deserves a visit, Just to see  .

I first visited this wine shop back in 2004 and they were asking 300 euros for Batuta 1999. I tried to get it down to 100, a decent price but still too much and all I could was then take a few pictures of the wine and ports to bring back souvenirs. Since then I never put a feet in this stupidly high price wine shop that keeps their bottle in direct line with sunshine.
