2001 Quinta do Infantado LBV Port

Post by Paul_B »

Hi all,

recently purchased for $32.75 CAD and still drinking as we speak.

Label shows a gold prize at International Wine Challenge 2006.
The back label shows us that this quinta in Gontelho close to Pinhao.
409 Magnums, 30 300 bottles and 3850 halves. My bottle is # 27,743.
No fining or filtering, full cork.

So LBV 2001, bottled in 2006 no fining or filtering.

Tasting first 5 minutes of opening (much too cold straight from my cellar at 13 celcius)
- explosion of sweetness. I didn't think an LBV could be this sweet. And then suddenly you hit a wall of dryness. Bang. really dry finish. The effect is surprising.

Tasting after 2 hrs (temperature now closer to ideal, 16-17 c)
Less bright, but still very dry at the end. Much better balance.

Day 3, as I type.
Sweetness is either less surprising to me now or the rest (alchool, tanins) have gain visibility to bring a nice balance.

Conclusion, at 25$ would be a fun bottle, at $32.75 it is a bit high for this wine. But I blame the greed of this government here. A quick web search proves my point. But if you want to try a very dry LBV that manages to be sweet give it a try.

cheers
Paul
