My boyfriend was bought a bottle of 1977 Grahams Port about a year ago. We have never had vintage port before and so have stored it in a cupboard in the dark, but stood up and in the kitchen (about 20oC).
Is it likely it has been ruined?

68 degrees Fahrenheit isn't a horrible temperature for Port, and since it was in a cupboard it's probably fine. It would be better stored at 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit (15 C) if you plan to keep it for a long time.
The biggest risk is that the cork dried out, but you can't really check that without opening the bottle and it wouldn't ruin the Port that quickly anyway. If you've only had it for a year it's probably fine.
If you plan to continue storing it, though, get it laid down so that the cork remains in contact with the Port.

I have had a case of port stored up right since the early 80's and it's still fine. I have not found a case that was stored on its side to compare it to. The Grahams '77 is a bit of an odd bird, so it's going to be difficult to determine whether the cork played a part unless it's really turned tawny or oxidized.

Consistency in storage is a key factor and if nothing else your bottle has achieved that. At a higher temperature there is an inverse aging curve that takes place, so the only real collateral damage the bottle has suffered is its ability to age for the long haul. I have little doubt that if consumed in the next several years ... you will find the current condition just fine. Just don't hold this particular bottle for the long haul.

Thanks for all your advice. Sounds like it's not the end of the world. We are going to open it at the weekend, so fingers crossed.

Well we opened it and it was still airtight as I heard the air rushing in as the cork came out (in two pieces!). And the cork hadn't dried out. What a relief. We really enjoyed it although it's the first vintage port I've had before so I have nothing to compare it to. I expected it to taste "old" but it was very fresh and not as heavy as I imagined it would be.
