One of Mario Barbeitos greatest coup was in 1944 when he acquired six small casks of 1900 Malvasia and moved them to his company cellar, and in 1956 moved them on to the cellar of his home, where it remained untouched and forgotten until long after his death in 1985. It was not until his heirs were removing some belongings from the house in 1994 that they discovered the wine. It was bottled in 1994, 1995 and 1996 ( last date on my 6 bottles ) and maybe later since I have seen in Funchal bottles with Barbeito's latest "lettering".
Casks were small in size, like French barrique. This is half the volume of a normal 620 liter Madeira cask and accounts for the high evaporation . when discovered in 1994 they were about 40 % full.
I have a different source saying it was 1.240 bottles. This source I am a bit doubtful about. No matter 18 bottles in Andreas offer is really a coup..
