Story of Barbeito 1900 Malvazia

Post by Reidar Andersen »

Since Andreas has come over 18 bottles of this wine, a very excellent one, I started to dug in my files on a sleepy, snowing Sunday morning,
and found a lot of stuff which you guys may find interesting. It is from 2001 and I don't find/remember my source, but I think/hope it is correct !

One of Mario Barbeitos greatest coup was in 1944 when he acquired six small casks of 1900 Malvasia and moved them to his company cellar, and in 1956 moved them on to the cellar of his home, where it remained untouched and forgotten until long after his death in 1985. It was not until his heirs were removing some belongings from the house in 1994 that they discovered the wine. It was bottled in 1994, 1995 and 1996 ( last date on my 6 bottles ) and maybe later since I have seen in Funchal bottles with Barbeito's latest "lettering".

Casks were small in size, like French barrique. This is half the volume of a normal 620 liter Madeira cask and accounts for the high evaporation . when discovered in 1994 they were about 40 % full.

I have a different source saying it was 1.240 bottles. This source I am a bit doubtful about. No matter 18 bottles in Andreas offer is really a coup..
Can't be many left. :salute:

I have a little story about this bottling too.

Given its date of birth, it made for the perfect wine to celebrate as my post prandial Millennium-eve rocked on. I was with Dorene that evening and she was not a real fan of Madeira, but I was hoping to change that perception with this particular delicious bottle, which seemed to be working.

At the stroke of midnight, welcoming in the new century, I pretended that I had dropped something and while on my knees, I peered up lovingly and asked her to marry me and handed her a ring which rested in a box under my living room couch. She never saw that one coming. I guess she liked that Madeira after all.
